New Student Residence to be Built at NSCC Cumberland Campus on Former Fire Hall Site
The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Cumberland campus is set to receive a new residence for students, and the location has sparked some controversy in the community of Springhill. Originally, the proposed site for the dorms was a public park, but after pushback from locals who cherished the space as a community hub, the town, college, and province had to go back to the drawing board.
After much deliberation, a new location has been secured for the student residence. The Municipality of Cumberland has announced that they are selling a property on Main Street to the province for the construction of the dorms. This property is currently home to the Springhill Fire Department, which will be moving to a new location once a new fire hall is completed.
Cumberland Mayor Murray Scott expressed his satisfaction with the new site, highlighting the limited availability of housing in the area and the need for more student accommodations. The property, which was assessed at $272,500, is being sold to the province for $25,000. This price reflects the value of the land itself, as the building on the property will need to be torn down due to the high cost of necessary upgrades.
The sale of the property marks a significant step forward in the development of the new student residence at the NSCC Cumberland campus. With the support of the community and local government, students will soon have a comfortable and convenient place to call home while pursuing their education. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this exciting project!
