Pennsylvania Students Who are Blind and Visually Impaired Learn Independent-Living Skills at Penn State Summer Academy
Are you a high school student in Pennsylvania who is blind or visually impaired? Are you looking to gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed in college and the workforce? Look no further than the Summer Academy for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired at Penn State, offered by the Department of Labor & Industry’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR).
Since 2009, OVR has been providing this immersive and transformative program to help students prepare for life after high school. The academy has served over 325 students since 2014, offering a wide range of classes and activities to build essential independent-living skills.
One of the unique aspects of the program is the opportunity for students to live in a college dorm, eat meals at a dining hall, and participate in team-building activities. This hands-on experience allows students to practice skills such as mobility with a white cane, requesting accommodations, study skills, assistive technology, and more.
Not only does the academy benefit students, but it also provides valuable experience for young professionals in the human services field. College students with related majors serve as Resident Assistants, guiding and supporting participants throughout the program. Many RAs have gone on to graduate from college and work for the Department of Labor & Industry, showcasing the impact of this program on both students and mentors.
If you are a Pennsylvania high school student enrolled in vocational rehabilitation services through the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services, this program is open to you. Partnering with families and educational institutions, OVR ensures that students receive the support they need to succeed in their transition to college and employment.
Secretary Nancy Walker emphasizes the importance of these programs in helping Pennsylvania families navigate the challenges of transitioning from high school to adulthood. By providing a supportive and immersive experience, the Summer Academy for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired is a shining example of government initiatives making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities.
