The Rise of Helicopter Parents: Are Gen Z Kids Suffering the Consequences?
Are Helicopter Parents of Gen Z College Students Going Too Far?
For years, we’ve heard about helicopter parents from Gen X and millennials, and the supposedly inept Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids they’re raising. It’s become a stereotype, but with a new class of young Gen Zs heading off to college, there’s some truth to these stereotypes.
Recently, a viral screenshot from a college parents’ forum on Facebook shocked many. A mom wanted to install a camera in her son’s dorm room to monitor his sleep and chores. This extreme example of overreach left people slack-jawed.
Going off to college is a big adjustment for both kids and parents. Parents are struggling to let go, but some are refusing to do so. They are inserting themselves into their kids’ college affairs in shocking ways, like demanding cameras in dorm rooms.
Some parents are even intervening in their kids’ roommate disputes, handling the issues for them instead of letting them navigate it themselves. This kind of overreach is not only shocking but also damaging to the kids’ development.
Studies have shown a correlation between helicopter parenting and anxiety and depression in children. Overprotective parenting can hinder kids’ development and rob them of their empowerment. It’s important for parents to let their kids learn from their own trials and tribulations.
While it may be difficult for parents to let go, it’s essential for their children’s growth and independence. Avoiding the heartache of not being needed by denying your child the opportunity to learn can be detrimental in the long run. Kids need to learn to stand on their own two feet, and parents need to be the ones to let them do it.
In the end, it’s crucial for parents to strike a balance between being supportive and allowing their children to navigate their own challenges. Letting go may be tough, but it’s a necessary part of helping kids become independent, resilient adults.
