High School Journalism Workshop provides students with insight into potential career paths

Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Empowers High School Students Through Journalism Workshop

The Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism’s High School Journalism Workshop is truly a transformative experience for the eighty high school students who participated in the 2024 workshop. From July 7-11, these students delved into the world of media and journalism, gaining valuable insights and skills that will shape their future careers.

One of the standout features of the workshop is the opportunity for students to choose from eight different media tracks, allowing them to explore various aspects of journalism and media. Whether it’s news reporting and writing, broadcast, magazine, public relations, visual storytelling, sports writing, publication design, or podcasting, students were able to immerse themselves in their chosen track and gain hands-on experience.

Melanie Qin, a rising senior from Westerville, Ohio, shared how the workshop opened her eyes to the diverse facets of journalism. She was not only able to learn about different aspects of the field but also had the chance to experience college dorm life and meet new people, enriching her overall experience.

Beyond the track-specific sessions, students had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, university professors, and Ohio University alumni who shared their expertise and insights. From investigative journalism to media law and ethics, students were exposed to a wide range of topics that are essential for aspiring journalists and media professionals.

However, it wasn’t all work and no play at the workshop. Students also had the chance to bond with their peers through various activities on campus, such as attending a baseball game and watching a movie together. This sense of camaraderie and collaboration was highlighted by Naomi Davis, a rising junior from Gahanna, Ohio, who emphasized the importance of working together both professionally and personally.

As Workshop Co-Director Mark Turner aptly puts it, the last day of the workshop is bittersweet, as students leave with a deeper understanding of the field they are passionate about. The workshop not only equips them with valuable skills but also exposes them to new experiences and challenges, preparing them for a future in journalism and media.

Overall, the Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism’s High School Journalism Workshop is a unique and enriching opportunity for high school students to explore their interests, hone their skills, and connect with industry professionals. It is a stepping stone towards a future career in journalism and media, and for many participants, it is a life-changing experience that sets them on the path to success.
