Springhill establishes new residence hall for community college students

New Student Residence to be Built at NSCC Cumberland Campus on Former Fire Hall Site

The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Cumberland campus in Springhill is getting a new residence for students, and the location has caused quite a stir in the community. Originally planned to be built on a public park, residents voiced their concerns and successfully petitioned to keep the park intact.

After going back to the drawing board, the town, college, and province have found a new site for the student residence – the current location of the Springhill Fire Department. The municipality has agreed to sell the property to the province for a nominal fee, allowing the fire department to stay in place until their new station is ready.

Mayor Murray Scott expressed his satisfaction with the new location, citing the limited availability of housing in the area. The property, assessed at $272,500, will be sold for $25,000, with the understanding that the building will need to be torn down for the new residence.

The project is still in the pre-design phase, with no timeline for completion yet. Once the design is finalized and a contractor is selected, more information will be shared.

This development showcases the importance of community input in decision-making processes and the value of finding suitable solutions for all parties involved. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project at the NSCC Cumberland campus in Springhill!
